5 Tips for Storing Tires
There are a few ways to make your tires last longer. Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to tire storage!
1. Make Sure They’re Clean
It’s normal for tires to accumulate dirt and dust when you’re using them. Leave the gunk on for too long, however, and it can cause damage.
That’s why it’s so important to clean your tires before putting them away. Consider using a tire brush with a bit of soap and water. Don’t forget to wipe down the wheels as well.
2. Upright Is the Way to Go
It’s always best to store your tires upright—that helps to reduce stress, which prevents distortion. If possible, place them on a piece of wood so that they’re not directly on the ground.
Whatever you do, don’t pile something heavy on them. If necessary, consider using tire hooks—that way, you can hang them easily.
3. Place Them Somewhere Cool and Dry
You want to place your tires in a cool, dry location. For example, you can put them in the workshop, basement, or climate-controlled garage.
Never put your tires outdoors, even if there’s a protective covering. The sun’s ultraviolet rays, not to mention the changes in temperature, can shorten their lifespan.
4. Cover the Tires
It’s a good idea to cover your tires with a storage bag. It’ll protect them against sun damage, dirt, rust, and moisture.
Before sealing the bag, get out as much air as possible with a vacuum cleaner. That’ll prevent the lubricating oils within the tires from evaporating.
5. Avoid Chemical Exposure
Ozone can damage tires—that is, it’ll cause the rubber to crack much more quickly. Given that, you want to keep your tires away from things such as central vacuums, sump pumps, furnaces, and electric motors.
Similarly, you want to make sure that your storage area doesn’t contain any fuels or solvents.
